Up All Night

Nuit Debout feature

To The New York Times, it’s “Night, Standing Up.” To The Washington Post, it’s “Stand Up at Night.” However its name is translated into English, the mass movement that has occupied the Place de la République since March 31 has entered a new  phase. What started in Paris as a peaceful nightly protest against labor reform has degenerated into violent clashes with police across France. And on May 15, Nuit Debout is going international, though retaining its original French name. France 24 calls it “Up All Night.” As it crosses times zones, perhaps the movement will live up to the last of these translations.
