À vous de décider

John Kerry and Bradley Cooper go toe to toe this week in the ongoing French-speaking smackdown. In a carefully parsed article in the March 11, 2013, issue of The New Yorker, Lauren Collins asks Camille Chevalier-Karfis of Web site French Today for an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the contenders. During his first visit to France in his capacity as Secretary of State, Kerry gets a clear thumbs’ up for an upper-class delivery, though Karfis suggests he could stand to lose the script and become a bit more décontracté.

A clip posted by Glamour UK showcases Cooper’s French at its easy, conversational best. Two thumbs up for his description of the hyper bien réalisateur of American Hustle. Cooper, hardly a slouch, studied French at Georgetown and enhanced his command of the language during an exchange program in Aix-en-Provence. Karfis swoons over his fluency and compliments his smooth elisions and solid grasp of French humor.
